When OHL first decided to create Mayakoba, a team of scientists, biologists, geologists, engineers and architects was sent to live on the land to discover its characteristics. This firsthand knowledge would allow them to determine how to best preserve the precious environment while gently developing a luxury resort within its delicate setting. The answer came in a carefully orchestrated scientific plan that took into consideration its unique regional environmental setting. Understanding the natural processes to improve the original mangrove structure, the plan was to carefully remove the top layer of the underground limestone tubes, exposing crystal clear water canals. This would create a truly new aquatic ecosystem that could be used as a gentle mode of transportation, as well as offer new habitats for wildlife and a relief for coastal environments.
Mayakoba has 15 km of crystal clear canals that link each of its hotels and amenities.
